About the startup
What is BlackBox Vault? BlackBox Vault is a secure digital legacy platform that lets you store encrypted letters, videos, audio messages, and files for the people you love, and delivers them automatically if you're ever no longer able to. Most people spend time on wills, life insurance, and estate planning. Very few leave behind the personal things - the letter to their kids they always meant to write, the video for a daughter's wedding they might not attend, the words for a partner that were always too hard to say out loud. BlackBox Vault is built for exactly that. How it works You create an account, add the people you want to leave messages for, and start building your vault. Letters, video messages, audio recordings, files, photos; all encrypted end-to-end with AES-256-GCM before they ever leave your device. You set a check-in frequency (daily, weekly, monthly - your choice). As long as you keep checking in, everything stays locked and private. If you stop checking in, BlackBox begins the delivery process and sends everything to the right people at the right time. Key features ✉️ Letters - written messages stored encrypted, delivered on your terms 🎥 Video messages - record directly in the app or upload existing videos 🎤 Audio messages - voice recordings for moments where words on a page aren't enough 📎 File attachments - documents, photos, PDFs, anything you want to pass on ⏱️ Staggered delivery - schedule messages to arrive at specific milestones (a child's 18th birthday, a wedding anniversary, years after your passing) 🛡️ Trusted Contact confirmation - designate up to 3 people who must confirm before delivery triggers, protecting against accidental false alarms 🔒 False trigger protection - trusted contacts can deny a trigger if you're fine and just missed a check-in 📊 Protection credits - every month of subscription earns credits that expand your delivery capacity permanently, even if you ever lapse Security first All content is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before upload. Files are stored on Cloudflare R2 with zero egress fees. Sessions are secured with HTTP-only cookies and HTTPS enforcement. We don't read your messages - ever. Available everywhere BlackBox Vault runs on web (blackboxvault.app), iOS (App Store), and Android (Google Play). Full feature parity across all platforms, including XHR-based file uploads with live progress bars and native camera/microphone access on mobile. Pricing Free tier available - 3 contacts, 2 letters per contact, immediate delivery. Plus ($7.99/month) and Premium ($12.99/month) unlock audio and video messages, staggered delivery, larger file storage, and more contacts. Annual plans available. Lifetime delivery add-on coming soon. The story I was driving down the highway one day and had a thought: if something happened to me right now, would the people I love know everything I'd want them to know? That thought didn't leave me alone. Ten years later, BlackBox Vault was live on both app stores. Built solo, fully bootstrapped, and built because no one else had built it quite this way.
