Contrarian Thinking charged after a year of a free 34-word newsletter
Codie Sanchez says she launched Contrarian Thinking in 2020 with a 34-word free newsletter, took a year to make a penny, then built Cashflow membership to a founder-reported $3 million 2022 run rate, separate from her dealmaking portfolio and Hold Co. buys.

The story
Codie Sanchez's about page states a career arc and a 2020 launch without turning Contrarian Thinking into a single nine-figure blob. She is introduced as a New York Times bestselling author. After graduating early from Arizona State with a journalism degree, she went to Juarez to document atrocities there; the coverage, the page says, earned a Robert F. Kennedy Award for print journalism. In 2008 she took a first finance job at Vanguard, just before the crisis. She later names Goldman Sachs, State Street, and First Trust. She also began buying, building, and investing in businesses such as laundromats and cannabis companies. That portfolio sentence is ownership activity, not newsletter revenue.
In 2020, when the pandemic stopped the world, the page says she launched Contrarian Thinking, described there as a free-thinking finance and media company. In a few short years, it says, Contrarian Thinking has empowered tens of thousands worldwide. Tens of thousands is a company claim, not a subscriber dashboard and not a revenue line. Her stated mission is to create one million financially free humans through business ownership. Through Main Street Hold Co. and Contrarian Thinking Capital, she and partners buy and invest in Main Street businesses. Hold Co. buying is not the newsletter. The media company is not the laundromat. Keep them labeled.
A 22 June 2022 first-person Starter Story essay is where she puts dates and product names on the media side. "I'm Codie Sanchez, and I am the Founder and owner of Contrarian Thinking." The mission in that essay is to free minds and build readers' bank accounts, and to help one million people become financially, philosophically, and physically free. The flagship paid product she named is Contrarian Cashflow, a premium membership: access to a premium newsletter, message board, recurring calls, and monthly Cashflow Playbooks, with single playbooks also for sale. She wrote that it was the system she used to go from zero to 26 businesses and eight figures in investment income by becoming a dealmaker. Those 26 businesses and eight figures are her investment-income claim, not Contrarian Thinking's media ARR, and not a subscriber count.
The newsletter start is small on purpose in her telling. Startup costs, she estimated, were about $5,000 for web platforms and LLC paperwork, then her on a laptop. The first newsletter went out on 15 February 2020: one paragraph, three sentences, 34 words. She wrote for almost an entire year before making a single penny. In January 2021 they launched a founders-club offering of Contrarian Cashflow at $500 lifetime access, later $1,500 a year. She publicly announced Cashflow in the newsletter on 6 February 2021. Zero outside capital, no pre-sales, no sponsors, no revenue at the start, she wrote. First subscribers were friends, family, and old coworkers after a mail merge to her Google contacts. The $5,000 is a cost estimate. The $500 and $1,500 lines are offer prices at two moments. null of them is 2022 run-rate.
Growth on the list, as she reported it, has dates. From 2020 to 2021 they grew from just over 20,000 newsletter subscribers and no members to over 78,000 subscribers and 1,400 Cashflow members. By the June 2022 essay she wrote that they currently had over 100,000-plus newsletter subscribers and a community of over 1.5 million people across social platforms, with a run rate of $3 million this year. She also wrote that they were a profitable business at low seven figures in ARR, with roughly 1.5 million followers or subscribers across platforms, and that the goal was to hit $5 million that year and $50 million in the next five. Run rate of $3 million, low-seven-figure ARR, and a $5 million goal are three different objects in her own paragraphs. Social reach of 1.5 million is not the 100,000-plus email list.
Those media figures still have to sit beside the investment sentence without swallowing it. Eight figures in investment income and 26 businesses are how she described the dealmaking system Cashflow teaches. They are not proof of the $3 million media run rate, and the run rate is not proof of the 26 businesses. The about page's Main Street Hold Co. and Contrarian Thinking Capital are the buy-side vehicles. Starter Story's Contrarian Thinking is the writing and membership engine she bootstrapped in 2020-2021. This record will not add them into one empire number.
She was blunt about what the early media company was not. It was not paid ads, and it was not, in June 2022, a mature SEO machine. Daily content on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok was the growth motion, aimed at the newsletter, then Cashflow. She hired social managers and used Slack, Google Docs, Zoom, Notion, WordPress, and ConvertKit. She was recruiting a salesperson and an executive editor. What she explained is the $10-to-$1,000-hour rule: keep herself on high-revenue tasks and delegate the rest.
The journalism-to-finance hinge is the product thesis. Words did not fix the issues she covered as a reporter. Money could. Georgetown MBA, Wall Street seats, then Latin America investments and a private-equity partnership, in her Starter Story telling, are building blocks for a company she calls an equal blend of journalism, investment firm, venture fund, and startup. That blend is a description of activities, not a license to call the 2022 media run rate a private-equity AUM figure, or to call the newsletter a holding company. She launched the letter when travel stopped. Cashflow was how the letter charged.
Pricing history on Cashflow is part of the business story. Lifetime access at $500 for founding members, then $1,500 a year, is a packaging change she dated. Founding members, she said, joined in the first month and surprised her with how much they would pay. 1,400 Cashflow members at the 2021 checkpoint is a membership count, not ARR by itself. Multiplying 1,400 by $1,500 would be an editorial invention she did not perform, and the lifetime cohort would break that multiply anyway. Leave membership count, list price, and the $3 million run-rate sentence in separate cells.
Read together, Sanchez's own pages describe at least three businesses that share a founder. Contrarian Thinking the newsletter and Cashflow membership is the 2020 media company she bootstrapped from a 34-word letter to, by June 2022, 100,000-plus subscribers, 1,400 members in the prior-year checkpoint, a $3 million run-rate claim, and low-seven-figure ARR. Main Street Hold Co. and Contrarian Thinking Capital buy Main Street firms. Her 26 businesses and eight figures of investment income are the dealmaking track she says she teaches. Tens of thousands helped, on the about page, is not 100,000 subscribers. null of those lines is a nine-figure portfolio total, and none should be filed as ARR for a newsletter that made nothing for its first year.
